TECHNICAL SELECTION SHEET

DG4V-5 Directional Valve - How to Specify One Correctly

Five steps from interface to coil rating. ISO 4401 Size 05, four-port, four-land spool, 315 bar working ports.
SIZE  : 05
DESIGN: 20 / 22
REV   : 2026-09
Read this sheet with the valve nameplate in front of you. Every field below maps to one block of the ordering code, and one wrong block means the wrong valve.
STEP 1

Confirm the interface before anything else

Size 05 is sold under several names depending on who drew the manifold. All of them are the same footprint. Match what your drawing says to the chain below; if the drawing names any one of these, the valve will bolt down.

Fixing bolt centres: 71 mm on AC models, 70 mm on DC models. Gasket mounted, four ports P / A / B / T.

STEP 2

Decode the ordering code block by block

J06 / J08 / J10 / J12 / J99 Speed control orifice 0.6, 0.8, 1.0 or 1.2 mm fitted plug; J99 means the port is blanked
20 – 29 Design number Installation dimensions are identical across the whole band
STEP 3

Fix the hydraulic duty

Working pressure, P / A / B 315 bar (4,500 psi)
Tank pressure, AC build 120 bar (1,750 psi)
Tank pressure, DC build 210 bar (3,000 psi)
Flow Not a single figure. Read it off the performance curve for your spool, plotted to 120 L/min (30 US gpm)
Duty Continuous, ED = 100%
Ambient temperature −20 °C minimum. Maximum 70 °C DC, 50 °C on 50 Hz AC, 40 °C on 60 Hz AC
Fluid compatibility Standard build: mineral oil, water-in-oil invert emulsion, phosphate ester. Water glycol needs the AC or F13 prefix
Response, 2C spool Reference point at 40 L/min, 175 bar and 100 per cent rated volts: 30 ms in and 40 ms out on AC, 120 ms and 45 ms on DC
STEP 4

Match the spool and the spring arrangement

The spool decides the flow logic; the spring decides the fail position. Settle the spring first, because it is the one a safety review will ask about.

A / AL
Spring offset, single solenoid. Goes to one end when the coil drops out. AL is the left-hand build.
B / BL
Spring centred, single solenoid. Returns to the middle position on de-energising. BL is left-hand.
C
Spring centred, double solenoid. Two coils, one at each end, spring returns the spool to centre.
N
No spring, detented, double solenoid. The spool stays where it was last put, including through a power loss.

Spool functions available: 0A, 0B, 0C, 1B, 1C, 2A, 2B, 2C, 2N, 3B, 3C, 6B, 6C, 6N, 7B, 7C, 8B, 8C, 11B, 11C, 22A, 23A, 31B, 31C, 33B, 33C, 52B, 52C, 56B, 56C, 521B, 521C, 561B and 561C, with L variants throughout.

STEP 5

Choose the electrics

Coils are wet-armature, on ISO 4400 (DIN 43650) connections. They hold in down to 90 per cent of rated voltage. The winding is Class H and the encapsulation Class F.

COIL RATING CODES
G 12 V DC
H 24 V DC
HL 24 V DC, 32 W coil
OJ 48 V DC
P 110 V DC
A / C / ED 110 / 220 / 240 V AC, 50 Hz
EK / EH 115 / 230 V AC, 60 Hz
NN 24 V AC, 50 Hz
- Other voltages on request
COIL HOUSINGS AND CONNECTIONS
U ISO 4400 mounting, no plug supplied
U1 ISO 4400 with a DIN plug fitted
U6 DIN plug fitted, with indicator lights
KU Flying leads from the top of the solenoid
KUP4 Junior timer (AMP) connector
KUP5D2 Moulded Deutsch connector with diode
KUP6D2 Flying lead with Deutsch connector and diode

DC full power coils draw 38 W; the HL coil draws 32 W. Protection reaches IEC 144 class IP65 once the plug is correctly fitted with the interface seal in place.

CHECK

Application fit

Before you fix the code, check that your machine belongs on this list. Each row states the equipment normally involved, the duty the valve performs, and the build that usually gets ordered with it. These are standard applications of the size 05 interface, not named projects.

Industry Equipment involved Duty performed Build usually ordered
Injection moulding and die casting Clamping units, ejector plates, core pull cylinders, shot cylinders Clamp open and close, ejector stroke, core pull, shot sequence Spring centred C or spring offset A / B, DC coil for the softer shift
Machine tools and machining centres Machine vices, chucks, index tables, tool changers, steady rests Workholding clamp, pallet indexing, tailstock advance, magazine movement Detent N where the clamp must stay put, otherwise C
Hydraulic power units and test stands Power packs, valve stands, accumulators, test benches Circuit selection, unloading, accumulator isolation, step-by-step sequencing Double solenoid C, DC rated for the higher tank pressure
Mobile and construction machinery Boom cylinders, outriggers, implement circuits, stabilisers Boom and outrigger sequencing, implement selection, stabiliser set Single solenoid A or B with the H water-resistant override
Metallurgy and heavy industry Press rams, roll balance cylinders, descaling headers, shears Ram advance and return, long low-pressure hold, roll positioning C for the double-ended logic, or N where the position must be held
Mining, marine and waste handling Winches, brakes, slewing drives, hatch covers, balers Conveyor tensioning, brake release, slew control, deck winch and hatch actuation A or B with the H override; IP65 confirmed with the plug fitted

Four limits to respect

The tank port is not a 315 bar port. AC builds stop at 120 bar and DC at 210 bar.
Flow is not a fixed number. Read it from your spool's curve rather than assuming a headline figure.
Ambient ceilings differ by coil. 70 °C DC, 50 °C on 50 Hz AC, 40 °C on 60 Hz AC.
Below 90 per cent of rated voltage the coil is outside its specification, so check the supply before blaming the valve.

Why this body keeps winning the specification

01 · INTERFACE STABILITY
The 05 pattern has not moved, and design numbers 20 through 29 keep identical installation dimensions. A replacement therefore never reopens the manifold drawing, which is the single biggest cost avoided.
02 · ELECTRICAL FREEDOM
AC and DC wet-armature coils mount on the same casting. Re-specifying a machine for a different supply market becomes a coil line item rather than an engineering change.
03 · TUNABLE SHIFT
Every DC model accepts a variable changeover speed. Four orifice plug sizes let you trade response time against line shock, so a banging valve can be quietened without a redesign.
04 · DUTY AND SPARES
ED = 100% continuous removes the duty-cycle calculation. Class H winding holds at 90% of rated volts. Seal kits, orifice kits and individual coils are all separate orderable items.

Selection questions, answered

Q01
What does ISO 4401 size 05 mean in practice?
It fixes the bolt pattern, the port positions and the gasket face. In practice it means your manifold drawing probably calls it something else - CETOP 5, NG10, NFPA D05 or ANSI/B93.7M-D05 - and all of those are the same interface. Check the bolt centres too if you are replacing a valve: 71 mm on AC models and 70 mm on DC models.
Q02
Which spool codes can I order?
Thirty-four spool and spring combinations are listed, from 0A through to 561C, and every one of them is also available as a left-hand L build. In broad terms 0, 1, 2 and 3 cover the common two- and three-position logic; 6, 7, 8 and 11 cover closed-centre and tandem variants; 22, 23, 31, 33, 52, 56, 521 and 561 cover the open-centre and regeneration duties. Tell us the flow logic you need and we will narrow it down.
Q03
Which coil housing should I pick - U, U1, U6 or KU?
Pick from how the machine is wired. U is the coil alone, for builders who already hold DIN plugs in stock. U1 adds the plug; U6 adds the plug and indicator lights, which shortens fault-finding. KU brings flying leads out of the top for a hard-wired cabinet, and the KUP family brings AMP or Deutsch connectors with a diode for mobile harnesses.
Q04
What does the J in the model code mean?
It marks the spool design, and it follows from the spool you chose rather than being a free selection. It applies to every DC build except 0A, and to AC builds with 8B, 8BL or 8C spools. If you are cross-referencing an older valve, keep the original letter rather than substituting.
Q05
How much tank pressure can the return line carry?
This is the spec that catches people out, because it is a fraction of the working pressure. AC builds are rated 120 bar and DC builds 210 bar at port T. Two code digits express the same thing: 6 means 160 bar and AC only, 7 means 210 bar and DC only. On a circuit with a heavily loaded return line, that gap is enough reason to choose DC.
Q06
What does option 57 add to a valve?
A spool position switch, fitted to single solenoid valves. It gives the controller an electrical confirmation that the spool actually reached position instead of relying on the command being sent. Where even more detail is needed, the S9 option provides a spool position monitoring function with its own separate data set. Neither changes the hydraulic rating.
Q07
Which seal kit do I order?
It follows the design line, not the size. Part 459057 covers the AC builds, which are the -20 design, and part 459058 covers the DC builds, the -22 design. Order by the model code on the nameplate and the kit will match.
Q08
What is MTTFd, and why does 150 years matter?
MTTFd is the mean time to dangerous failure used in functional safety work, here quoted as 150 years to ISO 13849. It is not a warranty period and it does not promise a valve will run for a century. What it gives you is a published reliability figure to enter into a machine-level safety calculation instead of leaving that field blank.

Still on step 2 or 3? Send the working pressure, the flow you need and what the actuator has to do, and we will work the spool and spring selection with you. Once the code is settled, send it with the quantity and the destination for a price and a lead time.
